Manchester City with another big win over Fiorentina

Manchester City with another big win over Fiorentina and progress through to the UEFA Women’s Champions League with a 5-0 win in the return leg and aggregate score of 8-0.

City already did most of the work in the first leg when they got a 3 goal advantage over the Italian side. As we saw already, Citizens started out strong, laying siege onto the Fiorentina goal from the off. Ellen White opened the count today by firing into the bottom corner in the 8th minute. The lead was doubled after a handball from Nicolo Zanoli. Caroline Weir was successful from the spot. Katja Schroffenegger did her best in denying Hemp and White from scoring more goals. But she was unable to do anything in the 32nd minute when Ellen White score her second of the day.

Reactions

“That was the word I used after with the goals: professional. We played with humility. The way we managed the game from the first to the last minute was excellent. We wanted to get to this point as a minimum because we haven’t been here for a while, so it’s a pat on the back for the players, but we want more. The players are keen to progress. We want to be in the latter stages. Today is done, we move onto the next round and we come back to the basic principles we work to in order to guarantee a performance.” – Gareth Taylor, Manchester City’s head coach

“We gave our best, so we accept the verdict with serenity. It hurts a lot to lose, but when you are up against a superpower that is stronger than you, you have to shake their hand and accept the result. My girls were heroic, there wasn’t one who felt beaten at 5-0. These games and these results can be interpreted by those who really know women’s football and understand the difference between these two teams, especially in terms of experience. I applauded my girls. Manchester City are much stronger than us. You can’t do more than your best. Today we did.” – Antonio Cincotta, Fiorentina’s head coach
