Vfl Wolfsburg with a 2-0 win over LSK Kvinner in the first leg of Last 16 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League which gives them a nice advantage before the return leg next Wednesday that will be played in Budapest due to travel restrictions.
In all editions of UEFA Champion’s League Wolfsburg has made it at least to guarter-finals. And again, they are on the way to play among the 8 best teams in Europe after a successful performance at AOK Stadion. Alexandra Popp put the Wolves in the lead already in the 2nd minute. Norwegian Ida Norström steered a cross from Svenja Huth to the crossbar, the ball bounced on a couple of times and fell straight in front of the Popp who had no problems scoring. Despite being much better team, Wolfsburg had to wait for another goal until 59th minute. This time cross from Rauch found Popp after some bouncing and Wolfsburg’s captain scored her 2nd goal of the night.

Alexandra Popp moved to third on the all-time UEFA Women’s Champions League appearance list with 78, secured Wolfsburg’s 50th win in this competition – something only previously achieved by Lyon and Frankfurt. LSK Kvinner are unlikely to participate in UWCL next season, since they must win the competition to qualify again after finishing only 5th in Norway last year.
Reactions
“I have mixed feelings about this game. On the one hand, it is important to hold onto the positive. We didn’t concede and achieved one of our goals. On the other hand, you have to say that we were lucky here and there – a goal for Lilleström would have been quite possible. As far as our performance is concerned, there is still room for improvement, but a 2-0 result is not a bad result either.” – Stephan Lerch, Wolfsburg head coach
