On Sunday, all the spotlights of the German football world, will be focused on the derby that could be crucial in the title race. In Frauen Bundesliga, Matchday 20, Wolfsburg will host Bayern. Currently, Bavarians are 2 points ahead.
It’s not just Women’s Super League that is offering some drama at the end of the season, also in Frauen Bundesliga we witness one of the most exciting title races in the recent years.
There are three match days left. But taking into account the course of the season, the Sunday derby should be decisive and give one team a clear path to the title. A month ago, Bayern looked like a sure winner. 5 point advantage, 26 games in a winning series. It was Wolfsburg who brought the series to an end and knocked Bayern out in the semi-final of DFB pokal. Chelsea knocked out both German clubs in the Women’s Champions League. First Wolfsburg in quarter-final, later on Bayern too. Bayern also surprisingly lost for the first in Frauen Bundesliga against TSG Hoffenheim.
The difference at the top is 2 points. Three points are must for Wolfsburg if they want to dream of defending their title. Draw most likely still favours Bayern. Bavarians will travel to Leverkusen and host Eintracht Frankfurt in the last two games, while Wolfsburg will face Eintracht Frankfurt away and Werder Bremen at home. It is unlikely that either team will drop more points in remaining games, since both teams showed consistency throughout the season. 3rd placed Hoffenheim is already 15 points behind Wolfsburg.
At the bottom of the standings, the battle to stay in Frauen Bundesliga is in full swing. Last placed MSV Duisburg are most likely doomed and will play in 2. Bundesliga next season. But the difference between penultimate SC Sand, SV Meppen and Werder Bremen on 9th place is just 5 points. Sand and Meppen will face each other next weekend which will be the game of the season for both teams.
Returning to the big derby, on the 15th of November last year, Bayern trashed Wolfsburg 4-1, which is the only Wolfsburg’s defeat of the season. Another one would surely guarantee them a title. But can they do it?
