Jessica Wich retires at the end of the season, the player announced today. She has spent last 8 years with Bayer Leverkusen.
The 31-year-old debuted on a senior level with SC Regensburg, but soon moved to Turbine Potsdam, where she spent 4 years. After a brief spell with Hamburger SV, the German striker signed for Frankfurt. In 2014, Wich joined Bayer Leverkusen and has since made almost 100 appearances for the Werkself. In the last few seasons, she has struggled with injuries (torn cruciate ligament and ankle fracture), which were the main reasons, she decided to hang up her boots. She will try to help her team as much as possible in the remainder of the season.
“At some point, the body gets involved, and you have to fight your way back again and again. Then it becomes difficult to keep up with the level of performance. At that time, the rehab was so long and I didn’t really make any progress. That’s when you start thinking about whether it wouldn’t make more sense to stop. But that’s not so easy, because as soon as you’re back on the pitch, your ambition is back and you experience all the hustle and bustle with the team again, you can’t let go so easily,” Wich said for the club’s website.
