Virginia Torrecilla extends with Atlético Madrid and will stay in the Spanish capital until the end of the next season. At the same time, six players that played significant roles in Rojoblancas squad, are leaving.
The 27-year-old has been with Rojablancas since 2019. In 2020, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and extended her contract already last year. After an extensive therapy and surgery, she was able to return to football and had an emotional comeback in January in the super cup final against Barcelona. In total, the former Barcelona and Montpellier player played 5 matches in the current season.
“Renewing with Atlético de Madrid until 2023 means a lot to me, especially the club’s confidence in me and knowing that I can stay one more year with all my teammates and with this club that means so much to me after what it has given me,” added Virginia.
The club also announced that Deyna Castellanos, Aïssatou Tounkara, Hedvig Lindahl, Laia Aleixandri, Silvia Meseguer, and Amanda Sampedro will leave the club, following expiration of their contracts. With over 500 appearances among them, Atlético Madrid look to refresh the squad quite significantly for the upcoming season.
